Let Your Light Shine

In May 2020, the Mississippi Arts Commission stopped me in my tracks when a group of artists and musicians collaborated on a performance of “This Little Light of Mine.” I went on to spend much of the summer with this simple tune running through my head. This is the summer I made my dream of Bold Speech Therapy a reality.  Although I had been planning for months, it was the time for the hard work to make it happen. I made a promise to myself that despite everything that was going on in the world, despite my insecurities, and despite my fears, I was going to let my light shine.

One of the greatest joys in my career is helping my clients let THEIR lights shine. When teens and adults come to me for help with their stuttering, they are often at a point where they are ready to do the hard work of change. I am here to help them achieve the level of fluency they desire. But just as importantly, it is my goal to help every client speak boldly and confidently in any speaking situation. Not when they are fluent, but now.

Recently and on an almost daily basis, articles and posts about perfectionism have been catching my attention. When that happens, I take it as a sign to PAY ATTENTION.  The message I’m receiving is this: perfectionism is the enemy of success. Waiting for perfection is the quickest way to failure. As I apply this to my own life, I encourage my clients to do the same.  You do not have to wait for perfect fluency to start living your best life. That can start today.

If you are a person who stutters and want help with fluency or confident communication, I can help. I am currently accepting clients in Mississippi, Texas, and Florida (Iowa license pending).

Your Bold Speech Therapist,

Jennifer Melton, MS, CCC-SLP
